I had the worst possible idea for a Jeeves and Wooster story ever, which, if past experience holds, means I should write it. But I have an important question first.

If Bertie absolutely had to get a job, not in some cute little scheme, but had to earn a living, what could he possibly do? I'm kind of stumped on this, even if Jeeves helps him out. My first thought was schoolmaster, but then I had visions of the children running roughshod all over him. So if Bertie had a job, what would it be?

Some ad exec job where he gets to drink all day like Don Draper and think up clever slogans.

O wait, we're talking in his time. *hmm* Definitely has to be something schmooze centric. *thnks on it*

Yes, this is not an AU. Except for it will be out of genre since I really really want to write about the two of them through the years, and the Wodehouse stories are very definitely of the twenties. I think, given the major historical events on their near horizon, any trip into the future would have to see the change of their relationship away from master and servant, so Bertie would have to get a job at some point.

I kind of want him and Jeeves to write pop songs. You know Jeeves would be great at the lyrics. Mostly I just have a picture of the two of them around the piano. So cute!

I'm not sure what, exactly, the job might be, but I could see him (quite by accident) saving some rich business dude who rewards him by offering him a job. Which he takes on a lark, but he discovers he's (unexpectedly) really good at it. Obviously nothing where punctuality is key. Perhaps making a list of the jobs at which Bertie would be the most absolute shit might lead you to jobs that use the opposite set of skills?

Maybe something middle-management and unremarkable--public servant, etc. Some people do better with gray, boring jobs because it allows them to be more themselves in the off-hours, instead of having to be dedicated and all that.

Indeed. Though Bertie might have to fail up. He's got people skills, but he seems to make a mess of everything. And it's sad for me to think of him in a career he's not very good at.

Sadly, both historically and at present, the answer you're looking for is ATTORNEY (or, in his case, Barrister, as he probably has the connections to finagle that rather than being stuck as a solicitor.)

Oh, what a horrible thought.

And then he'd accidentally get himself elected to Parliment?

You know Jeeves would never let him do that.

School teacher? Theater manager (a la Mrs. Henderson Presents)? Barrister is certainly a possibility. Clergyman? MaƮtre d'?

Publisher. Back in the days when that meant really, really long lunches.

Or some kind of salesman? One with an expense account, and a lot of wining and dining?
