I had the worst possible idea for a Jeeves and Wooster story ever, which, if past experience holds, means I should write it. But I have an important question first.

If Bertie absolutely had to get a job, not in some cute little scheme, but had to earn a living, what could he possibly do? I'm kind of stumped on this, even if Jeeves helps him out. My first thought was schoolmaster, but then I had visions of the children running roughshod all over him. So if Bertie had a job, what would it be?

Some ad exec job where he gets to drink all day like Don Draper and think up clever slogans.

O wait, we're talking in his time. *hmm* Definitely has to be something schmooze centric. *thnks on it*

Maybe something middle-management and unremarkable--public servant, etc. Some people do better with gray, boring jobs because it allows them to be more themselves in the off-hours, instead of having to be dedicated and all that.

Sadly, both historically and at present, the answer you're looking for is ATTORNEY (or, in his case, Barrister, as he probably has the connections to finagle that rather than being stuck as a solicitor.)

School teacher? Theater manager (a la Mrs. Henderson Presents)? Barrister is certainly a possibility. Clergyman? MaƮtre d'?

Publisher. Back in the days when that meant really, really long lunches.

Or some kind of salesman? One with an expense account, and a lot of wining and dining?
