Watched "Mean Girls" last night - fantastic movie - and I noticed something funny. The artsy girl (played by the actress who was Tina Greer in Smallville) is named Janis Ian in the movie. At first I thought this was a joke. Because Janis Ian is a 70's folk singer famous for the song "At Seventeen," which was on the soundtrack to the film. The song has lyrics like:

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And High School girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired.
The Valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth.

Entirely fitting for the movie, don't you think?

So, would you say this would be worth renting? I was of the impression it was just "Heathers" redone.

I have not seen Heathers, but I'd say it's definitely worth renting. Because it's not really about tearing the bitches down to size, it's about how teenage girls work and how it damages everyone. I don't know how much resonance this would have with a guy, but damn. It was so, so true. If you watch it, check out the Mathletes team. That was my high school Math team. Combined with the Quizbowl team. We even looked like that.

I love Janis Ian, and love that song. I love the connection you made in your post.

I thought Mean Girls was great. I saw it in the theatre and totally enjoyed it. :) And Lindsay Lohan is hawt.
