What makes the ending of the Donna story so unsatisfying for me is that we get a moment of understanding between Donna and the Doctor. He finally sees her insecurities--up till then I think he's just been steamrollered by this forceful personality and not looked too much beyond it. So we get this moment where he finally gets her, and maybe finally starts to help her understand her own worth--and not only does Donna get her mind wiped so that development's wasted on her, but the Doctor who realized this is the one shipped off with Rose. He had a real connection to Donna (beyond the biological), I loved that first scene between them. I would've liked to see that play out. But instead they treated consolation prize!Doctor as a prop in Rose's storyline and completely ignored his connection to Donna... *sigh*

There's a reason why I've already started three episode tags to this episode. So much to fix.

It's also the fact that *she* lost that realization as well--traveling with the Doctor taught her how strong and smart and capable she really was, and all that was wiped along with the memories. The Donna of the end is the same brash, loud, useless twit we saw at the very start of Runaway Bride, not the sassy, smart, sympathetic Companion we'd come to know and love.

and the whole second-doctor with rose makes her character really really pathetic. like she couldn't grow past that? martha did, as did sarah jane. rose was still jealous when harriet jones was like "martha jones, former companion to the doctor" she's like, "i was too" or "i was here first" and when she's calling the doctor she's like "find ME" - doesn't matter that the universes are ending, and she likely helped to cause that - she just wants to find him - doesn't matter what she has to do, or who she has to trample, to do that. also, agreeing with your point about second doctor and genocide - rose committed genocide too - she killed all the daleks the first time around...
