I went to the B&N at Union Square over lunch to pick up Storm Front by Jim Butcher. (I just finished watching "The Dresden Files," which I liked quite a lot, so I figure I should read the books.)

It's been a long time since I've been in a bookstore, especially one that large. I had to physically drag myself away from some of the display tables. The table with books on single topics, like Stiff, Cod, Salt, and one book on cannibals—I could have bought every book on that table and been happy. That would not be good for my time, my bookshelves, or my wallet.

Ah, what price, happiness? :)

WHAT BOOK ABOUT CANNIBALS?

No, seriously, is there a new one out? I want to know if there's one I haven't read or if this is just Eat Me reprinted??!!

Um...I don't know? It's on a display table at the B&N off Union Square? Seriously, I just glanced at it. Uh...the cover is black and red...

I feel left out of the discussion about cannibals. Man. Now I've got to go look it up.

No. The cover had a pot on it, I think with bones sticking out. Kind of woodcut looking. And a long subtitle about something something cannibals something something. I am so not helping, am I?

Hrrrrmmmmm....nonfiction?

Yes. It was on a table of true facts. Jeez there are a lot of books on cannibalism.

I'm going to have to go back to Union Square after work, aren't I?

Well, only if it bugs you as much as it bugs me.

And, yes, there are a lot of books on cannibalism. I think Reay Tannahill's Flesh and Blood was among the best, though it is some thirty years old now. Eat Thy Neighbor was good but didn't distinguish well enough between cannibalism and stories about cannibalism. (If you read it and didn't know better, as I didn't until I looked it up, you'd think Sweeney Todd was a real person.)

It was Among the Cannibals (http://www.amazon.com/Among-Cannibals-Adventures-Darkest-Ritual/dp/006135788X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212456781&sr=8-1) by Paul Raffaele, which they had out before its on-sale date. Naughty store.

Hrm. Not sure I like the "look at the backwards brown people!" take on the cannibalism, but yes, okay, I might have to check it out. Cannibalism is a never-fail interesting subject for me.

On a completely unrelated note: I actually knew one of the bogeymen on SPN the other night! I just finished The Devil in the White City (great book) and it was all about Herman Mudgett, aka HH Holmes. It came up in an episode and I was like, "Waaaaaaaait a tic..." So proud of me for recognizing it.

Hey! My buddy M works there. I LOVE that store. And yes, it's hard to get away...stay out of the third floor area. Too many cool things. *laughs*

Not a fan of the library? :)

Not really. Libraries require sequential aquisition of books with specific intent to read them. Bookstores allow massive bulk purchases that can be picked through at whim. Also, I keep all my books. Sometimes I'll know I read something in a book of a certain shape and color, and if I flip through my collection, I can find it. Not so if I return it to the library.

Hah :) Let me know if you like Jim -- I love him. I've got Small Favor sitting around occupying space on my bookshelf, and in a grad-student apartment, bookshelfspace is at a premium. I'm done with it, so I can ship it to you pretty easily.
