Chuck Norris sues Penguin for publishing a book of 400 "true" facts about Chuck Norris.

The best part of this, I think, is that the suit bases its claim on the fact that the book might mislead people into think these actually are true facts about Chuck Norris. True facts like, "Chuck Norris's tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried."

On the one hand, yeah it's his name and such that they're making a profit off of. On the other hand, it's clearly a joke, and he didn't get that the first time when he got pissed off when it was just online.

I hope he loses.

It just seems to me to be a man who is still resisting his public image. The public image that is the reason he has fans, I might add. He needs to learn a lesson from William Shatner.

When it comes to these lawsuits about names, I agree with Paul Newman for trying to get Princeton students to stop using his name as a fake holiday for binge drinking. But this just seems whiny. Clearly they should add a true fact about him not having a sense of humor.

Hah! I love it! Although, there is this commercial which would seem to indicate otherwise:

(hee, my favorite part is where the one guy scales the fence but the other one goes through the door)

I saw a shorter version of that. Notice how the point, though, is Chuck Norris going after unauthorized use of his image. I'm sensing a theme.

Yeah, you'd think that a joke ad about just that would be a good sign he takes this stuff not seriously. Oh well...

Edgehopper would have a better perspective, but I suspect he'll win based on the fact that they're using his name and public image without permission or payment. "400 "true" facts about ChuckRo" wouldn't sell anywhere near as well, and that's where his suit has merit.

The idea that the book might mislead people into believing an internet meme just has no place in a court of law. Yes, there are many, many stupid people in the world. No, court decisions should not be based on their inability to discern truth from parody. (Or the inability of their lawyers to discern truth from parody.)

I think they really got themselves into trouble publishing this on two fronts. One: they used his name and image to sell something without securing permission or providing compensation. Two: no one needs to buy the friggin' book because all of the things on it are on the internet somewheres anyway.

They keep publishing books based on internet memes and I keep wondering who out there hasn't heard all this already.

Wow, I need to not read LJ while suffering the cold from hell...I thought that said, 'Chuck Norris sues Penguin*s*.

And my first thought was, 'how one Earth could penguins have pissed Chuck Norris off that much?'

::::sigh::::

I'm either over medicated, or under medicated....

That would be awesome. And is clearly another true fact about Chuck Norris.
