I went with [livejournal.com profile] trakkie and a few other friends to see "Edward Scissorhands" the ballet at BAM last night. I enjoyed it quite a lot. It reminded me of how much I love that score (which I'm listening to again now), and would have been worth it just for the orchestral performance of the music. It's a movie that lends itself to adaptation as a ballet. Since it's a fable, everything is painted in broad stereotypes--the metaphors here are not subtle. I usually feel when I'm watching a ballet that I have no idea what's going on on stage, but since I'd seen the movie, that wasn't a problem here. Also, some of the best parts of the film come from Edward's physical awkwardness, which translates beautifully.

There was also a kid in a pumpkin costume that was the most adorable thing ever (except maybe for the dancing robot I linked this morning).

The downside: we were sitting in front of about thirty middle school girls who were not being supervised by their chaperones. They were climbing over the seats and gave a color commentary of the whole performance. In fact, they insulted one of my friends when she asked them to be quiet. Lovely. And of the four of us, I was the only one with a (mostly) unobstructed view, but that may have been just because I'm taller. Yay cheap seats!

Ha! It's a shame we missed each other--I was in rehearsal in the Attic (on the 4th floor). I walked to the subway with some of the Scissorhands dancers the other night. :)

Ooh my sister saw it in London and she said it was fabulous. It's a pity it's on such a short run, I don't know if I'll get to see it. (And that dancing robot thing was sooo cute, btw.)

maybe i'm getting older (or just old), but the whole teenagers-talking-in-theaters thing has seemed to have gotten worse - doesn't matter what kind of theater - movie, music, musical, whatever. there they are blabbing away. and i've had the same experience when telling them to be quiet. sigh....glad you liked the ballet though :-P
