Mar. 9th, 2007 11:50 pmYou know that law of the internet where if you say something should exist, you call it into being somewhere out there on the world wide web? Last night I said there should totally be Pirates of the Caribbean/Pirates of Penzance fic because Jack Sparrow needs to meet the Pirate King.
Well, there is. I have not actually read this. It involves vampires somehow. If someone does read it, tell me how it is.
ETA: Aaaaand it has eleven chapters. I'm not reading it! I'm NOT!
ETA2: I am a weak, weak person. I looked on ff.net to see if there was Penzance fanfic, and, of course, there was. A beautiful three-hundred word story where the author had named the Pirate King Iven. Which had sections like: "The Boy was His. Not theirs. His. With hyphens." And in the comments, somebody had meta'ed about the characterization of Frederic. Oh my fucking lord. Internets, you've killed me. I have to leave now.

Date: 2007-03-10 05:14 am (UTC)One of the Jacks is from Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. I've never seen Pirates of Penzance in its entirety and King's still my favorite of the three, so I wouldn't worry too much about hanging with the AU. And it's all set in the universe of Ultraviolet, which is funny considering that starred Jack Davenport, and Norrington shows up later on, and...
Oh, just read it. You know you want to!

BAH! He's only got what, two or three epithets by then? He hasn't even had his nautical adventure yet! How do you get him in? I suppose one could see him rescued from the Barbary Pirates by the more "civilized" Panzancians or Cpt. Sparrow (as opposed to burning off the syphillis in a Janissary tomb)...
NOW SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO?????

Date: 2007-03-12 12:53 am (UTC)I've been a G&S fan my whole life (my parents met in a light-opera society). I met up with a London fandom friend to go and see Penzance there, and we went for beer afterwards. She was already pestering me to write Sparrow/Shaftoe (from Stephenson's Baroque Cycle), and having been impressed by the swishiness of the Pirate King, she suggested he could be thrown in there too. I'd seen Ultraviolet (the BBC miniseries) a few days before and my brain was still fizzing with it. Through this alchemical process, a very strange AU was born.
Yes, I do name the Pirate King. Since my two other heroes were Jack, I decided he could be too - Jack King: the pirate King. *G* It's very, very, VERY AU, but I'm pilfering all three universes for characters - the Major-General is a villain, and I've worked in both Ruth and Mabel (though not yet in posted parts) and Frederic
k's coming later. (I've always spelt his name with the k, but now that I open my Savoy Operas and look specifically, I see I'm wrong. Meep!)Anyway, yeah, it's a WIP that's been languishing for a year now (but I am working on it again). And I can fully appreciate that vampires aren't everyone's bag, and if you're actually looking for in situ adventures of Sparrow and King, my fic totally is not it. But I flatter myself it's not too morally reprehensible. Y'know, in the grand scheme of things. *G*
Oh, and if you do find any semi-decent Pirate-King fic, I'd be very interested!

Date: 2007-03-12 11:18 pm (UTC)I now have an urge, though to write a fic where Hornblower runs into Frederic--the two are practically identical characters.
A truer word was never spoken! Politeness would abound, and much discussion of the very great honour of doing one's duty. *G* (I was going to suggest throwing Norrington in there too, but even before the second movie, I think he would've rolled his eyes, downed his drink and pissed off. *G*)
