Jul. 30th, 2013 03:34 pmYou guys! You guys! The Mapparium is TOTALLY AWESOME.
Ignore the fact that it is part of the Christian Science Center. It is a three-story tall stained glass globe. Standing inside it is like being in an experimental radio piece. It sounds like people are whispering right in your ear. If anyone's standing towards the middle, they sound like they're speaking through a loudspeaker. I can't even express to you how incredible the soundscape of this place is.
And it's a map from 1935. Africa is color-coded by colonial holder. Hawaii and Alaska aren't states. Newfoundland isn't part of Canada (and I didn't even know that it hadn't joined till 1949). It has Manchukuo, which is ENORMOUS. The Korean peninsula, owned by Japan, is labeled "Chosen."
I am telling you, if you are in Boston, best six dollars you ever spent.
