I'm catching up on my Smallville, and the end of season 4 makes me nostalgic for the finale of season 3 Buffy.

Oz: Can we have a moment? Check it out. We survived.
Buffy: Yeah, the battle was pretty intense.
Oz: Not the battle. High school. And we're having a moment...and, we're done.

That's how you do an end-of-highschool episode. None of this "won't next year be wierd" crap dialogue.

Yeah, back in the day when Buffy used to be the center of Joss Whedon's little universe. Once he got distracted by Angel and then, eventually, Firefly, he forgot about his little show that could.

Also, Oz was so my favorite for the first like three seasons. He stayed amusing-ish for the fourth, but once there was that second werewolf-let's-make-Willow-a-lesbian-to-get-over-Oz push, it just, meh, ruined his funness. He was like the affable, irrascable version of Cordelia--he said what's what, was pretty cool about it, and I miss him.

Or in other words, Oz was fun until they decided to make him an angsty emotional type. But then, Cordy's transition to "depth" wasn't much smoother.

I just love this moment in particular. Joss is not so subtly reminding us that the show is not about monsters and demons, it's about high school. Oz's little "moment" is the perfect goodbye to all that. Not sappy, not overdone, just a little bittersweet. Chokes me up every time.

[livejournal.com profile] chuckro, I don't know if you've seen the second to last ep in season 4 Smallville (I think you have), but they try to pull off the same sort of "huh" feeling of graduating high school. But Joss's version is poetry, and Smallville's is just overwrought.

Precisely, which is why Cordy being banished to Angel was a good thing. Oz being banished period, not so much.

Changing subject, but I didn't feel like making a new post on my own LJ--did you notice that the final scene of Serenity shows the pilot's seat decorated with Wash's dinosaurs? I found that quite touching. (Saw the movie again on Saturday)

Of course I noticed. Not stop hijacking my post.
