Dec. 16th, 2012 12:28 pmWell that...happened. It was more like hitting play all on the deleted scenes from a movie than it was an actual movie. As expected for turning one book into three movies, it was extremely bloated, and seemed to spend most of its time on exposition. And for being a three hour movie, had surprisingly little characterization. Most of the dwarves had distinctive hair instead of characterization, but even Bilbo didn't get much depth.
There was still a lot of pretty, and some fun moments, but blergh. I felt like to omuch of it was winkingly reminding us about LotR. I was trying to think if there have been any succesful movie prequels that don't spend too much of their time reminding you of what you already know. It is possible to tell a good story when you already know the ending, but it's hard. And the only movie prequels I can come up with at the moment were disasters. (Star Wars anyone? X-Men Wolverine?)
Fellowship I think was the best of the original trilogy. So if this is the best of the Hobbit trilogy, and we get the middle movie next with middle movie problems--oof.
It doesn't help that it was unbelievably hot in the theater and the seats weren't all that comfortable for sitting in for three plus hours.

Date: 2012-12-17 05:06 pm (UTC)It was fun, I liked seeing Middle Earth again, and I enjoyed the additions (have always loved the appendix of LotR!). Plus I love Gandalf and Bilbo, and the riddle scene really worked for me.
I look forward to the next movies, and I'll also keep my expectations appropriately set on medium.
