Hugging a Twinkie could get messy....

And the hoarding and selling them for thousands of dollars on eBay has begun. Because the media is blasting that "Twinkies will be gone forever!" nevermind that when you sell the IP of a company, whoever buys it is going to want to use it. Someone will be making Twinkie, probably in the exact same factories. It'll just be someone without the same union contracts who can pay their workers (likely the same workers) half as much. Though I predict the price of various Hostess products will go up (because of this media frenzy/scare) when they do return, and the new company will be much, much more profitable for the shareholders.

Which is what this nonsense was all about to begin with. Screw the workers, screw the consumers, get money to the stockholders.

If labor costs were the problem, why wouldn't the new company take the IP and move the factories, say, south of the border, where they can offer comparatively generous benefits to the workers while also slashing costs a whole lot?

I'm going to guess import tariffs and bad PR. There may also be legal (contractual) obligations that prevented that.

Dunno if I've had a twinkie, ever. The Mom frowned on such things, and I never developed a taste for them. Ah well, I'll wait til somebody starts making twinkies again, I suppose.
