Just to warn you, there are gonna be a ton of these posts as that movie tumbles about in my head. So many layers - guh!

I love Mal's speech before they go to Mr. Universe. To paraphrase (no, I don't have it memorized yet), "The Alliance did these because they believe they can make people...better. I don't believe that."

How gut-wrenchingly despairing and completely true, not just for the character, but for the show. Firefly is about people. And how even if you take those people and put them on different planets, and give them spaceships and doodads, they are still just as evil and just as good as they were before. That's one of the main reasons I love Firefly. Joss's vision of the future, unlike so many others (um...Trek!) is filled with people doing the same damn things they've always done. They can't be made to be better.

What's surprising in that line is that Mal could have easily spun it some other way - the Alliance was trying to control people (since I'm sure they developed Pax to prevent another Civil War), they were trying to meddle, to take away people's free will, but no. That's not the way Mal sees it. He doesn't hate the Alliance now for abusing their power but for the belief that people can be better.
