I caught a bit of the Stargate pilot on Scifi tonight. And remember my comment about the full frontal nudity in it? They pretty much cut that entire scene. Only two shots remain. And given that that scene is pivotal to the plot, not just of this episode, but of the series - it is the scene where Daniel Jackson's wife is implanted with a Goa'uld larva - that's some censorship. I spotted a couple other little scenes, too, that must have been cut for time.

And that's why I refused to watch the first five seasons in syndication...

Since when have censor boards ever cared about plot integrity?

Frankly, I hate it when shows are cut for syndication, because more often than not, you lose important bits of plot or at least coherant scenes, and in exchange you get more commercials.

To be fair, there was no reason why the scene needed to be shot in such a graphic way in the first place. It was completely gratuitous. But, having been done that way, it is a powerful scene. They show not just Shau'ri's fear and pain over the procedure but how this affects Teal'c, leading, we presume, to him turning on his master. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but suffice it to say that without this scene, the plot doesn't make too much sense.

Especially since it parallels and earlier scene that was shot in a less graphic manner. So they kept the first one and cut the second, which makes the narrative form severely lopsided. But whatever. I prefer watching on DVD anyway because - no commercials.

May I ask why they're censoring their own show? Sci-Fi Channel seems to do this a lot. They'll put up ads for the 'original sci-fi movie' and then you'll sit down to bleeps and obvious edits for content and time and all that bull. Um, why make the movie if you're unable to show it as it was originally created?

According to [livejournal.com profile] darkling1, it was on Showtime for the first six seasons, so they're not censoring their own show.

Speaking of original content...

I saw an ad for "The Man with the Screaming Brain" last night and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the pain.
