When I was home for Christmas, I saw a book that I bought from the Boston Computer Museum in 1993:

The Smiley Dictionary by Seth Godin. I remember getting it because--oh look! You can make faces with a keyboard! (I will point out I didn't go on the internet at all until 1995, and didn't have access on my own computer until 1999. Emoticons were far in my future when I bought this book.)

And it has a valuable coupon in it! For $5 off Compuserve! So valuable is this coupon, it is advertised on the cover.

No, but he wrote Tinker, Tailor and Smiley's People - Smiley being his main character. And stuff.

Ah. Having never read Le Carre...

No, it is a little book of emoticons. What I find most amusing about it is that Godin insists that the default smiley is :-) and I've never see people use a nose.
