I've always remember Cromwell's birth and death dates because of it! Cromwell is of particular interest to me, since I'm descended from one of his uncles, who sat as a judge over Charles I, then fled to America when Charles II ascended. (There's a place in New Haven called Three Judges Cave, where he and two other parliamentarians spent a winter hiding from royalists.) So a branch of my family only came to the New World because of these events!
Also: - A greater percentage of the British population was killed in the English Civil War (~3.8%) than in any other war, including WWI. - When Cromwell attacked Ireland, he slaughtered roughly 600,000 people. In a country of 1.4 million.
