"I just had an apostrophe."
"I think you mean epiphany."
"Lightning has just struck my brain."
"That must hurt."

Remember back in Ep I where Shmi said there was no father? And then Qui-Gon hypothesized that the metichlorians (or however the hell that's spelled) had conceived Anakin on their own?
Well, I always thought Shmi was full of shit. I figured that she must have been raped, possibly by the Sith, possibly by Palpatine, and that's where Anakin came from. That was my prediction way back in May 1999. Looks like I'm right and Shmi's right.
Palpatine gave that whole speech about the wise Sith lord learning to control the metichlorians to create life. The implication is that this was Palpatine's master and he has learned how to do this as well. So...
What if Palpatine used the metichlorians to create life? What if he is the reason Anakin was conceived?
Doesn't explain why Ani's mother is a random slave woman on Tatooine, but I think it's the only way to explain the immaculate conception in a way that doesn't make me gag. We know that Palpatine needs an apprentice to overthrow the empire (I don't know why, but it seems like he does), we know that he is willing to lay the seeds of his plan over a decade in advance, so why not create the apprentice himself? That would make him the supreme puppet master over Anakin's entire life. Maybe this is asking too much of his abilities, but it makes a certain amount of sense.
Also note that what Palpatine says about the downfall of his master is true for him as well; he can control life, but not his own life. He too is killed by his apprentice.
