I am rewatching The Mummy. Now that I know something about Egypt, wow this is so crap! Everything they could possibly have gotten wrong they got wrong. Five canopic jars. They mummify people alive...without the mummifying part. You know, the seventy days in natron that actually dries them out. It refers to a Book of the Dead...and it's a book (there were no books then--it was a scroll). They refer to Seti I (Ramses II's father), but show them building the great sphinx at Giza. Even though that happened two thousand years previously, and they're in Thebes. ARGH. Everything out of their mouths is wrong! I may have ruined this pinnacle of movie-making artistry for myself.

Also, I bought a set so I'd have the sequel. I must not have opened the DVD before because it seems like I also now have a copy of the Scorpion King. Greeeeat.

The thing you absolutely have to remember when watching the Mummy is that it is deliberately cast in the mold of the old cliffhanger serials of the 1930s. Including the utter inaccuracies to the setting. It's part of the movie's style, so it all works as a piece.

Oh, and watch the Scorpion King but then watch the deleted scenes immediately after. They make the movie actually make sense.

As a send-up of serials, it's brilliant. I think you're right that they must be being deliberately obtuse. In order to have canopic jars with the appropriate figures of the sons of Horus on them, as they do, they must have done some tiny bit of research, and that should have been enough for them to know there were four. Also--pyramids, Thebes. And apparently the original 1930s Mummy was fairly accurate, according to the lecturer.

I have seen Scorpion King in college. I don't really feel the need to see it again (even if the version I saw was pirated and of crap quality).

Well, I hate to admit it after reading this, but I adore that movie. Not the others, but the first one. And yeah, it's totally wrong.

But I love it anyway.*gg*

Well, obviously I love it or I wouldn't own it. It just hurts to watch now.
