A word on elevators
Mar. 17th, 2005 03:21 pmThe elevators in my building are haunted. Sometimes you'll get on and the doors will shut and it won't go anywhere and you have to push the door open button and get out and just hope another elevator lands on your floor because you can't call one because one's already there. Sometimes one will just sit on one floor and the doors will open and shut and open and shut and open and shut. And one of them, when it goes up past floors, the numbers will light up even though nobody has pushed the button, and then the elevator will stop on all those floors on the way back down.
All of this means it's not reassuring when they put up a notice in my office saying the Union of Elevator Mechanics is threatening to strike. We're on the 37th floor. This is no small matter. There are people in my office who've gotten stuck in them, and I think the elevators are as old as the building (built in 1970).
Here's hoping they strike and I get a few days off from work.
But still - an elevator strike? That's just funny.
