I just watched Star Trek III for the first time. Wow. For a movie with such an angsty premise, it sure is about a lot of shit blowing up. Also, what is up with making Uhura sit out the mission? Why didn't she get to go?
And does this mean that Spock kind of technically lost his virginity to Saavik? These are important questions.

But if I were to go there, I'd point out that the writers originally intended for Saavik to actually get pregnant from the encounter, a plot development that never happened thank God and I'm going to stop talking about this right now because it makes it seem like I paid attention to this and I really, really didn't. So, yeah.

Date: 2009-06-29 04:12 pm (UTC)The whole thing with the Pon Farr--there were a million reasons they could have avoided that. Like, oh, the fact that in "Amok Time," it seems like Spock has never gone into Pon Farr before, and he's far older than the kid on the planet. (He's credited as 13-year-old Spock, so I'm going to assume that's Spock's age at that point.) And then there's the uncomfortable-making hand stroking scene. I was wondering where the Vulcan-hand-stroking-as-foreplay thing I've seen in fic came from. Apparently it came from not wanting to show an adult actress making out with a teen.
If Vulcan males go into Pon Farr at thirteen, it does raise some really interesting issues about consent. Cause if they have to have sex at that age, I would doubt that Vulcans would have taboos against having sex with an adult. It might even make sense for there to be a cultural place for sexual surrogates, to help males through their first Pon Farr. I just imagine them looking at human statutory rape laws with a quirked eyebrow.

Date: 2009-06-29 09:31 pm (UTC)Okay, moving on. So long as we're not talking about someone specific going through this frankly ludicrous mating nonsense, I can talk about it without wanting to throw up. I like your idea about how Pon Farr would influence sexual relationships and Vulcan's views of other's legislations regarding them. I just don't know how easily one could have that come up so specifically that you'd understand the inference. What I mean is that Vulcans as a whole probably find every other sentient species' mating habits somewhat distasteful. (They don't like their own very much, even.) So it would probably be hard for them to understand what amongst many generally gross practices of human courtship would be more or less weird to them.
That said, if you found a fic about this, I'd totally read it. I'm a little sick of the fic for the movie these days (which is most of what I read for the fandom as a whole) because it's so ship-centric. This is generally what drives me to drop fandoms after a few months--I'd much rather read some meta-inclusive stuff than pwps forever.
