Since I was asked a couple times last night for my opinion on the last episode of SPN, I just want to put this in context. As I said, I can't see the mentioning of slash as anything but a friendly jab, given what goes on at conventions. Especially since Misha Collins joined the cast. He's said at a previous appearance that he's curious about this "slash" thing, and wants to learn more about it. At a con going on this weekend, he crashed Jared and Jensen's panel and asked, "Is it difficult to play brothers, seeing as you are lovers in real life?" (I have seen the video--I would repost, but the poster requested that people not link her.)

So. Yeah.

Eric Kripke is an enormous fanboy, and Misha appears to be a burgeoning fanfic consumer. So them talking about it in the show was not a reproach. Kind of the opposite. (Still not happy about them calling out a TWOP poster, but can't have everything.)

If people are still interested, I can hunt up some meta links on this ep that are more articulate than I was after a pina colada at Dallas BBQ.

I wonder if that poster has remarked on it? Regardless, I agree--calling out by name is rather callow. It's close enough to the edge to bring the real-life fandom terms into the show without making it personal.

She has. I know I saw the link somewhere, but you could probably find it on TWOP faster than I.

I agree--I don't care how annoying the fan is (in this case, apparently, very), on the one hand you have a fan saying stuff on the internet. On the other hand you have somebody running a network TV show. I don''t care how provoked you were, you use that show to chastise the fan, you're a bully.

Yeah, it's a differential of power. Kripke, having a network show behind his opinion, has all the power. If he wields it against a detractor, he's a bully. End of story.
