NCIS is the most ridiculously overwrought angsty fandom, and yet every time I see a rec, I click the link, only to turn away in disgust two paragraphs in when Tony starts crying in the squad room cause Gibbs never tells him he did a good job. God. Why do I keep clicking? Why?

Being a watcher of the show, I can say that this is barely beyond the canon-as-written. Seriously, with the exception of Ziva, everyone in the squad has at least had a sad-face-and-misty-eyes moment over failing Gibbs or believing that Gibbs believed (unjustly) that they had failed him, or what have you.

Too true. Angsty ridiculous show breeds angsty ridiculous fic. And yet if someone could pull these absurd premises off, it would be maaahvelous. So I keep trying.

Come on. Tony TOTALLY cries in the squad room ALL the time!

And that frat boy thing is TOTALLY a mask to hide his inner pain. And every time Gibbs slaps him on the head he gets FLASHBACKS to when his father used to BEAT HIM and LOCK HIM UNDER THE STAIRS. Plus he is so crippled from the plague that he can barely sit at his desk without a coughing fit and Gibbs DOESN'T EVEN CARE.

They don't see his pain. The random viewer doesn't see his pain- he's so good at hiding himself behind that mask. And they don't realize that he secretly cuts himself, and has an eating disorder, either.

Why is it that fandom sometimes latches onto a character as a woobie and then decides to completely murder their characterization? If it's not Tony, it's Daniel or Rodney (which is just laughable) or Iolaus (which, warrior) or Obi-Wan (which, Jedi)...

Tony at least has given some indication that his antics are a front. But still. He's not the public emotional breakdown type.

You're right- there's always one character in every fandom that gets unilateral woobie designation, and all these fics about how they're really 13 year old girls. Xander, Wesley, Blair, I could go on and on.

I don't know. I keep clicking on links to SPN-related stuff that [livejournal.com profile] dotfic throws up and getting (surprise!) uncomfortable slash stories more often than not. But I still do it for the one or two that she recs that don't make me go, "Oh, come on, fandom!"

You're actually looking for the ridiculousness? Then SPN is the wrong fandom for you. Check out [livejournal.com profile] ncisficfind the next time you feel the urge to roll your eyes.

I'm not though! I'm looking for decent, well-thought-out fic. And [livejournal.com profile] dotfic occasionally finds some. She's the best hope I've got, too, seeing as I'd have to do what you do and randomly search otherwise and the success-to-failure rate would be much, much worse.

I yes, she is a lone gen warrior. You could also try [livejournal.com profile] crack_impala, which does gen recs on Mondays, and het and other slash recs on Wednesday. Of course, that means you'd have to OMG! scroll past the wincest and RPS, but at least it's all separated by category.

[livejournal.com profile] killabeez also keeps a Supernatural rec list of awesomeness, though I don't think she's updated in a while. I think she separates by pairing, but I'm not sure.

Mostly, it's not even a case of wanting to read fanfic so much as trusting what is recc'd. So if I do read it, I know that it's been vetted. It's just that some of what is vetted is not to my taste. I just keep clicking away (as you do) regardless. :)
