The heavy, meaty taste was there. The saltiness was missing. What I was really looking for was little bursts of salty bacon flavor in the midst of the standard sweet apple pie, which is what I got in the bacon chip cookies v2.
I think the optimal version would use thick-cut bacon, but you'd have to come up with an appropriate way to add it after baking the pie, so the salt didn't leech out. I'm not calling this idea dead yet.
Bacon streusel, added after baking. Very little to no bacon in the pie itself, and then some kind of crunchy bacon topping?
I think part of the problem was that the salt and meat flavor dispersed into the pie. I wanted a bite of apple and bacon, and got apple-flavored bacon and bacon-flavored apple. Everything just tasted like fruity meat instead of fruit and meat.
