Here is a style question that frequently bugs me. How do you put an emoticon in parentheses? (It always looks like it has a double chin. :)) (Or it looks like it's Cookie Monster. :()

It's wrong, but I sometimes end with the emoticon (like this :)

I usually opt for this solution, as well. I, too, know that it's wrong, but it has the least jarring effect, I think.

I usually put an extra space between the emoticon and the parenthesis. (Like so. :) )

It's not always a perfect solution, of course(sometimes a line break winds out falling between the emoticon and the parenthesis).

This is indeed a dilemma. ;) I use the extra space method, but it's still not pretty.

Hee. That has always bugged me. I end with just the emoticon.

If I'm in the mood to care, I always just put a couple extra spaces after the emoticon.
