AHAHAHA. I just saw the tail end of the CBS Evening News, which was devoted to the Twilight mania. They interviewed this 13 year old girl about why she loved it so much, and she said, "They just have the PERFECT relationship. I mean, he cares for her SO much, and he's SO protective of her, and it's just WONDERFUL." GAG ME. It was one of the most nauseating interviews I've ever seen. What has happened to independent women? They called Twilight "Harry Potter for girls" in the report. WTF? Harry Potter was Harry Potter for girls! There were all these tween girls who were saying, "Oh, I NEVER used to read before this, and now I read EVERYTHING!" Really? What do you read? Because I can tell you, Jane Austen will be too difficult for you (like the time I was getting my hair cut, and overheard another stylist telling her client "Oh, I've been trying to read Pride and Prejudice, but I can't understand what's going on. I didn't get it until I saw the movie." Meaning, of course, that Keira Knightley travesty that dumbed it down so much there was barely a plot. I had to bite my tongue to keep from being like WTF? How is the plot too complicated?) :-P This is what I was talking about when I said independent female characters are disappearing from entertainment and being replaced by these over-emotional girlies that need a MAN to come save them, protect them, whisk them away. No more Murphy Brown on her own. Even the "independent" women are really looking for their Prince Charming (e.g. SATC). Another case in point - all these girls thinking that Bella's relationship with Edward is "just PERFECT." BLECH.
