Nov. 7th, 2008 03:25 pmWith my Sony Reader, I get to download 100 free classics. How sad is it that I can't find a single one I want? I attribute this mostly to the fact that a huge number of these are classics in foreign languages, which means that this translation is in the public domain. And really, I'd rather pay for Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf than get a free version translated by a random person two hundred years ago.
I learned when reading Dumas that the translation matters.
And as for the English classics--I pretty much already own the ones I want.

Date: 2008-11-07 09:40 pm (UTC)I have a bookshelf at home which is all stuff that I've read that was hugely influential on me, that I still refer back to--stuff like Machievelli's Prince and de Tocqueville. And I just realized I can carry all those things on my person at all times. You have to understand--I've carried a copy of the Constitution on me for the past ten years (it comes in more handy than you'd expect), and now I can also carry the Magna Carta, the Federalist Papers, the Mayflower Compact, the Gettysburg Address, and the Patriot Act. On me at all times. And I can carry a ton of poetry on me at all times, and flag my favorite poems.
Oh...I'm starting to fall in love with this little device. I don't think it will replace actual books for most of my reading--god knows, I already own too many books I've yet to read. But I can use it for submissions from work and fanfic, and now to carry around my favorite texts for reference. \o/
And yes, you can buy memory cards for it, so I'll be fine.
