Why NPR gets my dollars
Aug. 29th, 2008 12:04 pmIn an example of how much interpretation affects a song, check out This American Life's Break-up Songs. First of all, I'd recommend listening to the show because it has a fantastic, definitely off-the-beaten path interview with Phil Collins that gave me a whole new appreciation for his gooey pop phase.
As part of the show, Starlee Kine wrote a song with musicians Joe McGinty and Julia Greenberg. Then they opened it up for anyone to remix. They've posted their favorites here. First off, I like the original song. But it's interesting to hear how different performances, and sometimes just different mixes, completely change the song. I put this one as a win for the column of opening up intellectual property. Allowing other people to play in your playground leads to all sorts of interesting things.
