May. 9th, 2008 09:50 amOr, the GIANT GAPING PLOT HOLE. Let's look at that plot hole, shall we?
1 – Lilith ordered Bela to kill Sam and, according to Ruby, wants Sam's "intestines on a stick."
2 – Lilith holds Sam's contract.
This just begs the question: if Lilith wants Sam dead so badly, why did she make a deal with Dean to bring him back in the first place? Even if she wanted to bring him back and her opinion has now changed, Sam and Dean have definitely done enough research and torturing of demons to violate the "if you try and weasel out of the deal, Sam dies" clause. A good lawyer could show that, let alone a demon. So if Lilith really wanted Sam dead, he'd be dead.
Which means, assuming that this isn't actually a plot hole and there is a reasonable explanation, one of two things. Either Lilith doesn't hold the contract, and I believe she does, since she's been introduced as the Big Bad, or she doesn't want Sam dead. I believe the second. If she wanted Sam dead, he was dead. All she had to do was nothing. End of story. But by making the deal with Dean, she now has a hold over Sam. She can control him, which is far more interesting. She needs him for something else, and the only way to ensure his cooperation is to have Dean's soul, which Dean so generously offered up.
Whether she needs Sam for some ritual or needs his powers or needs his soul, I leave it for the show to surprise me. But with such a clever set-up, rife with the possibility of drama when Dean realizes just what he's done to Sam, I don't buy that Lilith wants anything so mundane as to kill Sam.
So why order Bela to shoot him? This actually came to me as I was falling asleep last night and I had to physically fight the urge not to get up and post then. Clearly she never expected Bela to succeed. But, by giving Bela hope, by offering her a way out of the deal, she kept Bela from doing anything that actually could have gotten her out of the deal. By collaborating, Bela, Sam and Dean might have been a threat. Instead, she got Bela to steal their only effective weapon and waste their time dealing with her. Divide and conquer. It's brilliant, actually. So if the show offers me any other explanation than this, I am calling foul. There's no other reason for Lilith to get Bela to hunt Sam—come on, she's a demon and Bela's not much of a foot soldier.

Date: 2008-05-13 12:44 pm (UTC)I really like this explanation. I'm possibly biased because it goes with my own speculation of Lilith wanting Sam evil and thus removing Dean (who's the moral compass) being imperative, but yes, this works. :)
