On the new big bad
Feb. 21st, 2008 11:41 pmA little meta before bed.
I'm not sure how I feel about Lilith. On the one hand, I have been hoping for a while that Supernatural would bring in Lilith at some point, so when the name first dropped, I was thrilled. And I get the creepy child thing, I do, especially since all the female demons we've seen so far have been of the sexy vixen variety. But Lilith is not just some so-evil-her-eyes-are-white demon.
Lilith is the first woman. Depending on what apocrypha you look at, she was thrown out of Eden for wanting to be on top during sex, for wanting to be equal to Adam. You could make a case that since she was cast out of Eden before the great fall she's immortal, and therefore not subject to the human-->demon cycle in Supernatural.
I want to see her as like Hecate, with the three faces of woman: maid, matron and crone. She could be the original woman, like the platonic ideal, with every other woman some reflection of her. But what makes her so fascinating to me is that, if you take the story that she was Adam's first wife, then her existence disproves divine justice. God made her and discarded her. He cast her out through no sin of her own. She could be a phenomonally ambiguous character, one who, like Lucifer, looks at god and sees the inherent hypocrisy. For this reason, and the whole first woman thing, she'd be the perfect adversary for Dean.
I see also that in some traditions Lilith is a storm demon (as I said, depends on what apocrypha you look at). But this is like what they did with the seven sins--why bring in Lilith if you're not going to milk it, examine every facet of what she says about god's justice and what she represents for women. And who knows--maybe they will. But if they just wanted a creepy child demon with white eyes, there are plenty of other demon names to choose from.
I also see on wikipedia that in Kabbalah, Lilith and Samael form one androgynous being, a pair to Adam and Eve. Interesting.
