I just saw Patrick Stewart in Macbeth at BAM, which was fantastic. The seats, however, were the most uncomfortable I have ever sat in. They were hard as boards, the back was at a ninety degree angle, and if you have hips, the arm rests were strategically placed to dig into your side. If you're one of those people that doesn't quiiiite fit into a seat on the subway, these chairs were designed to torment you. Add to that that they were raised off the floor so that your legs dangled (even mine, and I'm five ten). They gave you a little foot rest to prop yourself up on, which made it fine...for about fifteen minutes. The play was three hours. It's like someone decided to design chairs so that the entire audience was on the edge of their seat, cause there was no other way to sit.

It was sort of like being on a crowded airplane flight with a really good in-flight movie and no snacks.

Any idea why BAM seems to be the preferred destination of the RSC? On the face of things, it seems like kind of an unlikely choice to me.

Well, yes, but that's just because those were the cheap seats...

Heh. Well, we were front row balcony, so not too bad. But the orchestra seats looked just as hard and narrow, even if they didn't have the added bonus of being too far off the ground.

I was seated in the Orchestra section (Thursday night's performance), and while the seats themselves were fine - ok padding, no arm rests, and generous space between - my feet were a bit twitchy by the end of the play because of the lack of leg room in front.

It was such a great performance, though, that the twitchiness was no biggie at the time.

Y'know, I saw Medea at BAM years ago, and thought the same thing. Loved the show, hated the seats. I too felt like I was on the edge! Well, I'm glad you saw an awesome show, though. :)

Yeah we had that problem with Lear. But we're going to see Macbeth tomorrow, whoopee! I will tolerate the seats for that.
