A new competitor has emerged on the field of eBook readers: Amazon's Kindle. This thing seems to have been designed by people missing that Apple IIe chic. Seriously--could it be any uglier?

From what I can tell, the controls are a little less asinine than the Sony Reader's. However, though you can put all sorts of files on the Kindle (except pdf's--what the hell), the only way to do so (from the report I read) is to email to the Kindle at the cost of 10 cents a file. Yes, 10 cents for every file I can already read for free on my computer. It seems that amazon is still under the impression that their job is to sell books. They're trying to sell the reader to sell ebooks, rather than selling ebooks to sell the reader. Have we learned nothing from Steve Jobs?
