Huh. Well, that was boring.
We finally get an episode that spends more screen time on female characters than male and they kill one of the recurring female characters. Why am I not surprised. And notice that now the only female character from season one that has made it to season four is Teyla.
There were cute moments in this, but the story was so blah. It was derivative in the extreme. The fact that they mentioned all the things it was ripping off (Alien, Nightmare on Elm Street, not to mention an SG-1 episode) did not make it more original. It just sort of pissed me off. Yes, I know you're ripping stuff off. It's not cute that you reference it. If you're going to rip something off, please, for the love of god, do something with it.
And one of the things they ripped off—the season one SG-1 episode with the crystalline entity—had nothing to do with this storyline. At all. It was so different I was distracted. I kept expecting it to follow the SG-1 episode, which it didn't. So why use crystalline entities?
For a show whose plot was exploring the subconcious minds of the characters, what they showed us was terribly unimaginative. They could have showed us anything. It could have been "Restless," on Buffy, with random scene changes and "I wear the cheese. The cheese does not wear me." Instead it was Alien knock-offs and a row boat.
Rodney suddenly has a paralyzing fear of whales? What the fuck! Last season he was giving them names and treating them like pets. If you're going to retcon, dear writers, please don't pretend like none of us have seen the show before.
This season, so far, has been as uninteresting as the ninth season of SG-1 got. I hate to say it, but I think the franchise is worn out. If you have to spend five minutes in every episode explaining how this fits into the greater mythology and referencing six or seven previous episodes—even when it's a stand alone ep, not a mythology ep—it's time to start a new show.
Why are all the shows I follow so blah this season? Where has all the squee gone?
