I can think of only one person who will read this (I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] trinityvixen) but it needs to be said.

First of all -- Clark talks Santa Claus out of killing himself? Gag me. No -- gouge out my eyeballs with a spork. Smallville, seriously, what were you on?

As for the "It's a Wonderful Life" Lex story, it gets a sappiness rating of 11, but Lex being non-maniacal is all cute. What redeems it for me is his mother. You see, she's being all saintly dead mother-y and telling him to live a simple life filled with love instead of following in his father's footsteps. Just from this episode, the interpretation would be that Lex fails to see the point of this, that it is better to have loved and lost, etc, and essentially becomes the next Hitler to save Lana's life. (Hello Revenge of the Sith -- and when a show evokes strong comparisons to a SW prequel, you know you're in trouble.)

But then you have to remember who Lex's mother is. All through seasons 1 and 2 we got from Lex that she was this saintly woman who was the only spot of affection in his life, and he canonizes her because of that. And then in season three we find out - whoops! - not so much a saint after all. This is the woman that smothered her infant son, in front of her other son, to "save" him from his father. And then let the older son take the blame for the murder. That is what Lex's mother thinks love is. She is a sick and twisted individual deeply deserving of psychiatric study. And that is the person showing him this vision of the future where Lana dies and telling him it's better for him. Of course it doesn't work; of course it's fucked up. This is Lex's mother we're talking about. And I'm going to pretend the episode's writer had the season three backstory in mind when he wrote this or my eye teeth might rot out from the sweetness.

Also -- I don't buy Lionel letting Lana die. He's that vindictive, yes, but there's no way he'd miss a chance to entangle his son in his life again. Saving Lana would give him permanent leverage. He'd do it just so Lex would be indebted to him.

Season 1 Smallville icon! *sigh*

Wait till you see the revenge of Mama Luthor, that's all I's saying 'bout that.

I either missed or forgot her history (or didn't particularly care), but she's pretty awesome in her own right, right there. She's definitely a Luthor. Lex should be more worried about that than he worries about his dad.

At face value, this episode is using such a cliche in the form of Lex's dead mother that I just have to pretend they're playing the subtext, or I will get physically nauseous. But that's probably me giving the Smallville peeps too much credit.

You'd be correct about that. This show still doesn't really realize how HoYay! they are, and we've been saying it since the premiere.
