Remember the whole kerfuffle about the Sobol Award? The contest whereby unagented authors got a shot at a book deal with S&S for a mere $85 entry fee? Well, it's been cancelled, due to lack of participation. Proving that people are not as stupid as they look. At least not all of the time.

Am I missing something beyond: Pay $85 to essentially get your manuscript added to a slush pile and lose your rights to sell it; something that you could otherwise do for free?
