Because it's new and untried. Wait a year and buy the second-generation, which will have worked out some of the bugs and will be far less expensive. Assuming it survives that long.
Oh, I know. The superego says wait and hear some reviews. The id says want it now! I'll give you one guess as to why. ...it begins with "F" and ends with "ic".
If you think that's nice, there's also the irex iliad. (http://www.irextechnologies.com/products/iliad) Bigger, with clearer resolution (images and manga look completely FANTASTIC on the screen). I've been following both products for most of this year (and the Jinke version, which is cheaper than them both), and I'm leaning towards the iliad despite the 800$ pricetag.
I guess it depends on what you're wanting to look at. Sony's Reader is geared towards DRM content ebooks and manga, while iliad is geared towards free/non-DRM content. (though iliad is supposed to have a DRM solution coming out. it's sorta available for consumers, but I still see notices that they're informing people to wait until they have the finished consumer version ready, rather than the business model they have now.) And it has a nicely integrated wifi.
Since just about everything I read is free and in html, the iliad is more attractive to me. Manga and fanfic, without having to print off a bunch of stuff? woo!!!!
*sigh* now if I only had some money available for fun-tech like this. Or if I could get work to help pay for it (I need it for... work purposes!).
