Wednesday night line-up
Feb. 12th, 2004 12:36 pmAltogether, not bad. Not good, but not bad for a Fast and the Furious rip-off.
Pete
Pete finally gets his own episode. How long has it been? Since the fat-sucking vampire in season 1? For Pete's character, this is a good start. In my mind, this need to turn into a character arc. If they just drop him again for the rest of the season, I will be ticked.
This ep showed Pete to be exactly what he is - immature, reckless and stupid. It makes sense to him to go from, "I can't keep living in your shadow Clark, I need to do what I'm good at," to, "I seem to be in a wee bit of trouble, Clark. Will you rob a bank for me?" Asking Clark to rob a bank is a low blow, even for Pete. Pete knows Clark feels incredibly guilty about that, and he asks him to do it again. Especially in light of the fact that Clark is just realizing that his little stunt may cost his father his life.
I don't believe Pete's apology at the end. Oh, I think he means it, at the time, but he has so far been completely immature in his decision making. Even in Duplicity, he relies on Clark's super-powers to get him out of fixes. He feels intimidated and overshadowed by Clark and at the same time treats him like his own personal superhero. In this case, Pete got himself into trouble and did the most cowardly thing possible. He didn't go to the authorities, he didn't face up to his irresponsible actions, no he ran straight to Clark and asked him to fix it. Even though Clark's father is in the hospital. Even though this is not Clark's problem. Even though this could get Clark into a lot of trouble. And if emotional blackmail weren't enough, he even alludes to telling someone Clark's secret. It's official, Pete is now despicable.
I think this character arc needs to be continued. Who else really wants to see the Chloe intervention? *raises hand*
Clark
Clark is walking a very fine line between morality and hypocrisy here. True, as Pete points out, Clark's broken into many places before, but I think here he is beginning to see that that's an abuse of his power. That's how I read it anyway. He could just be a hypocrite.
Clark steals Lex's car. Whoa. And you would think Pete would be a little ticked that his salvation came from the Luthors. I think Clark's plan just proves how stupid he is - let's face it. That was a dumb plan. I think this is a case of Clark getting involved where he really shouldn't. Pete dug his own grave, but Clark still feels obligated to help him.
Lex
Lex knows Clark stole the car. Lex gives Clark an opportunity to come clean, and Clark lies really badly. Hello rift. But, the saving grace of this scene is Lex's comment about doing anything for his friends. Lex said this in season 1 (can't remember the ep) to Clark, and now Clark is making the same type of decision. So even as Clark is hurting Lex, Lex sees that Clark is becoming more like him. Can't wait to see how this plays out.
As for all others
- Lana, gag me.
- Adam's getting Clark's blood - that's interesting. The question is, will this add to Clark's guilt complex?
- Does Lex really need another sexy doctor to manipulate?
Oh, watch out, Gunn. It's the beginning of the end, baby.
Just a quick note on next week's ep. MUPPETS??!?!! Angel as a freakin' muppet? For God's sake! There must be a better way to give David Boreanas a week off.
