So, last night I watched an episode of "The Flash" with [livejournal.com profile] chuckro, [livejournal.com profile] jethrien and [livejournal.com profile] edgehopper.

Yes, that is Mark Hamill. In ... oh god ... words escape me. He's playing the Trickster, which is basically the poor man's Joker. So it was interesting to see him play a proto-Joker with a proto-Joker cackle, but the writing was so fantastically awful (not to mention the costume) that it was truly impossible to take pleasure in it.

He actually voices The Trickster in an episode of Justice League Unlimited, and it was brilliant and funny. It was both poking fun at the live-action version, but also had a funny, poignant moment about superheroes and villains that was a high point among Great Moments in the Animated DC Universe.

Oh, he did a great job, but the raw material he was given to work with was shabby at best.

*runs to rewatch Return of the Joker*

Are you kidding? The Flash is a terrific show!

chuckro asserts that other episodes were better than this one, but we eventually decided this episode was populated by int 6 characters. Nothing any of them did was even remotely logical or a good plan. And if it was - that costume *points* should be shot.

The other episodes are generally better--Jethrien actually commented on the point in the pilot where Barry, realizing that something's happened to him that he doesn't understand and can't control, goes to an expert at STAR Labs for help, rather than being the typical "I can solve this myself" manly superhero.

And just think: You could have been here to see it, too.

Actually, I thought the costume was totally appropriate - he's supposed to be a crazy guy, not a superhero. He's a psycho who broke into an abandoned warehouse. Of course he's going to have a lousy costume! Also, his car is spray-painted. Again - of course he's going to have a lousy car! He's a random psycho, not someone with a tailor and a gadget shop!

But - comic book! Verisimilitude not high on the list, here! If he's able to find a theater full of mannequins to stage a show while on the run from the police, then he's capable of finding a better costume than that. I want my villains to have some sense of style.

I thought that Murphy's fake Flash costume had the most style of anything in the episode.

Oh, definitely. Especially with the eighties sunglasses.

I thought it just made it more clear how delusional and pathetic he was. I kind of liked it.

But the incredibly bad acting and writing was inexcusable.

Pathetic villains are fine (hello, Mad Hatter). But if he's pathetic, the Flash should not be having that much trouble defeating him.
