Argh!

I now know why my computer keeps rebooting mysteriously in the middle of the night. Windows is automatically updating the security features, then rebooting. I don't want to turn this off, but I wish it would ask me before closing all my open programs.

This iteration, guess what I lost. That's right, my beta on [livejournal.com profile] trinityvixen's batfic. Seems I hadn't hit save when I stopped the other night. I was only a few pages in, but still. There are few things more annoying than having to re-edit something.

At least I'm so pathological about saving the Constantine fic that it's fine.

Uh oh! Sorry to hear that! I should probably get around to the next chapter, thanks for the reminder.

Do you want us to send some tech gurus down your way to figure out your machine? If you're updating security features and it shuts down on you, that's cause to be concerned--a virus or worm or other malicious software might prevent you from updating your security in order to keep its hold on your machine.

Do you need a copy of Symantec or something?

I have no idea. I think it's succesfully downloading, just rebooting so that the new program will function.

I'm paranoid about automatic updates. I know this is probably backwards, but my philosophy is if my computer works right now, I don't want to change anything because if I do, it might not work.

It's not a bad philosophy, though I ceded control to Windows update myself some time ago. Things I don't update automatically? AIM, iTunes, and WinAmp. I hate later versions of AIM with the ads (complete with sound, so really obnoxious) and the stock ticker and a hundred other things that make it impossible to view your buddy list. WinAmp I only refuse to update for fear of not being able to use the skins I've collected, and iTunes has me paranoid about them finding out how many of my mp3s aren't obtained from my CD collection...

The tech folks here just came to change my permissions. Not to give me more, mind you (because the firewall just started blocking Yahoo Finance, which I need), but to take the ones that seemed to be making one of my programs work away. They fiddled things around and the program still seems to function, but I just know that this will cause something else to collapse.

Our IT folks lose more of my respect every day.

Another reason I could never be a gamer - I almost never install new software on my machine. My old laptop crashed every January for four years until I figured out it was the drivers for my mother's printer that kept fouling up the damn thing.

Then I'm coming at you with Symantec, if you want. I get a free version from Columbia, which is the complete install. I'll download a copy and bring over my USB key some time.

No virus protection software? ::shakes head:: I'm worried now that you have a virus, and those sorts of things are beyond me except for the basics. One suggestion for you to try: hit Cntrl+Alt+Del and get the system manager window and check to see what processes your computer is running. Google them if you don't know what they are and try closing down any that aren't happy and follow up with them. Might give you a better idea of what's going on.

Alternatively, we could back up your hard drive onto my external one and wipe the damn thing, install symantec on the clear board, and start all over again.

You are using Firefox browser, yes? (God help me if you're running IE...)
