ivyficSo I loved it. I've already watched it all the way through twice. Really, if that was all we got I'd be happy. Loki versus bureaucracy is brilliant. I was really worried about Owen Wilson, as I'm not generally a fan, but he works. Tom Hiddleston is just a fantastic comedic actor. All the aesthetics of the TVA really work.
But really what I loved is that they managed in one episode to retcon a cohesive emotional arc and motivation onto Loki across five movies that really didn't have cohesive anything. I mean, Loki, as the antagonist, has behaved in plot required ways, and that doesn't always make a whole lot of sense beyond--who knows why he does what he does--mischief! They also flat out called out Avengers for Loki not actually being mischievous. And they gave Loki a chance to really emotionally react to his mother's death and his role in it, where the movie (which, less be honest, was bad, though I enjoyed it very much) did not give him any room to do that--because it was Thor's story, not Loki's.
Also, the whole meta aspect of the Timekeepers being the keepers of the sacred timeline as not even subtle reference to the writers as keeper of the Canon was very clever. Why was the Avengers time travel okay? Cause canon.
So yeah--love it so far. Unfortunately that means that all they can do is fuck it up. But even if they do, I am keeping this episode. It is mine.
...now I need to go reread some Loki fic.
