Why does a show that aired when I was a preteen and is as yet unavailable in any commercial release have annoying teenybopper fans? Where did they come from?

I've spent over a hundred dollars on eBay acquiring just eight episodes of seaQuest DSV. It's not a readily downloadable show either - I've looked. Though it's coming out on DVD in December, it has been almost completely unavailable for over a decade, and I admit, it wasn't that great of a show in the first place. I expect a fandom like that to be anemic, but I don't expect it to be overrun by annoying rabid fangirls.

Is Jonathon Brandis that potent?

I think it's the law of the internet: sooner or later, the fanbrats discover everything. They wander across this fandom innocently, they find a cute boy on it, there's a tragic real-life story (always helps), and they're hooked.

I'm still baffled by the attraction to 'smarter' fandoms or obscure ones by fanbrats. You'd think they'd settle for the Mandy Moore movies or something.

Funny that you mention it, since the legitimate fandom seems to have dried up when Brandis died. A lot of the fen from the time the show was on stopped posting, or in some cases, took down their websites and their fic and asked that people not read it anymore.

Maybe fanbrats emerged into the vacuum. Parthenogenesis.

Asexual reproduction certainly would explain the lack of variety when it comes to fanbrats and their ability to explosively multiply.

Moreover, it would provide an explanation for why fanbrats know absolutely nothing about sex, thereby providing a reason for the numerous slash and het fics that don't take into account need for lubricants or else really, really limber joints to accomplish the sexual acts mentioned...

Perhaps they know nothing about sex because their average age is 13. Or because slash fiction is routinely written and propagated by women who have remarkably little idea how male-male sex (and in many cases, even female-male sex) works.

Perhaps there should be a code included in story titles that means, "I've never actually done this, so don't expect my descriptions to conform to reality." Like science fiction, it'd be sex fiction.

Randy Milholland's usual brilliant take on the topic:

All I have to say to that comic is ACK!

As for the anatomical accuracy... There's actually a resource for slash fen online by a gay man who writes slash (one of the very few). He put it up there so the rest of us had some idea what could and could not be done. I'd give you the link, but it's not exactly work safe.

Email it to me so I can look at it at home. I'm actually kinda curious what he has to say. (And frankly, I read Dan Savage. I doubt there's anything there that'll seriously scar me.)

Because many trendsetting fanbrats are "smarter" teens. Somewhere between the kids who live for shopping and getting drunk behind the Quik-E-Mart, and, say, us ivy league types, there's a collection of folks who are smart enough to appreciate good entertainment, yet not quite to the level where they can produce anything resembling it.

And then again, at one stage in our lives (which happened before the internet was prominent, thankfully), we were these people, too. I have a great deal of stuff I wrote when I was 13 that I thought was fantastic at the time and I'm currently glad I wasn't able to post anywhere.

Don't we all.

Pssh. If I'd known you were that desperate I would have sold some episodes to you--I have the 2nd season two-hour premiere and the William Shatner episode :P Oh, and I'll also sell you a can of Darwin if you're interested...

Can of Darwin?? No, the ones I bought are all season 1 and it was long before I knew you. Now there's a crack-dealer fan posting most of the episodes periodically to YSI. But that doesn't explain why fanbrats would dig up this fossil show in the first place.

And for the record, my favorite character is Krieg followed closely by O'Neill. This was the beginning of my obsession with Ted Raimi. I've always gone for the geeks.

I really am surprised that there are teenybopper fans-- I barely remember seaQuest, although my father and I watched it all the time, and I'm 20.

Wasn't it on SciFi in living memory?

Yes, briefly. Which is a great boon to us fans, but I don't see that attracting a newer set of viewers. It was on at like 2PM weekdays.
