I do not understand this thing called Facebook

So if I post an event on Facebook, and then a bunch of people "like" it...what the hell does that mean? That's not a yes I'm coming or a sorry, can't make it. It's an "I acknowledge that there is an event." Seriously. This communication medium is broken.
