Jun. 4th, 2014 07:08 amI woke up this morning with "The Greatest Love of All" stuck in my head. It's one of the first songs I remember knowing the lyrics to. As I lay half asleep, I was thinking--what an odd song to be such a big hit. I mean, it's not a traditional pop song at all. But maybe it makes perfect sense that it was a huge hit in the 1980s, since it captured perfectly the cultural movement towards the importance of self-esteem.
Wikipedia tells me that the lyrics were written by a woman struggling with breast cancer, about that struggle. She eventually died of it, but not before the song was an international chart topper. Now I'm all choked up about it.
