I woke up at 3AM last night. Why? Because my computer rebooted itself.

WTF???

This is the second time this has happened. My computer, all on its own without any programs running or any input from me restarted. Does anybody know what could possibly be going on? Would a virus cause that? Is it just Windows being weird?

I would prefer not to be jolted again from sleep by C-3PO wailing, "Please don't deactivate me!"

ETA: I think I just figured it out - there was a thunderstorm last night. bigscary's probably right.

Is it set to auto-download patches for Windows? If the patch requires a reboot, it will often automatically reboot when the computer is idle. Mine does that on occasion.

I don't think so (I hate those auto-update features - I want to know when things change on my computer, dammit) but could be.

How about you kill the speakers when you go to sleep?

Also, unless it's very important, why are you leaving it on at night at all? Put it into standby or sleep mode just to save energy if nothing else.

Three comments - three totally different answers. I usually do kill the speakers, I just forgot to last night. I pretty much always leave my computer on. Standby mode is a lot more trouble than it's worth. The only really annoying thing about having it reboot is that I often have three four fic I intend to read open in browsers, and when it cuts out fffft. I keep meaning to bookmark those things, but since I don't refer back to the bookmarks after I read them, it doesn't seem worth it. Oh well.

Another option would be to remove the sounds when you boot up/power down. Just a thought. Depends on how much you love your C-3PO.

I understand the thing about leaving windows open, I do that, and when I unplug my laptop before slipping the battery back in, I get muchos cranky about missing those. My laptop, though, I close and it goes to sleep, starts up again (usually) with little or no difficulty. Have you tried hibernating your desktop? That's different from stand-by mode, and it's less of a pain...if I've got the right term here (hibernate vs standby). I don't know how to do that to a desktop, other than maybe going through the power options?

Is it a desktop? It's entirely possible your power is dropping out for a second, or the cord is loose and losing power for a second.

Quite possible. The last time my computer went out it was because I blew a fuse. Thank god for surge protectors.
