I was actually having moments of--is it Portuguese and I'm not hearing the difference? But no. Definitely not. Portuguese is pronounced substantially differently. I had a whole conversation in Mexico with a Brasilian choir member over the differences in pronunciation between Spanish and Portuguese, and between continental and Brasilian Portuguese, and she was using "tambien" as her example word. So that was in no way Portuguese. Just...confusing.
I wondered the same thing when what's-her-name mentioned a caipirinha yet everyone was speaking Spanish. Not that anyone in a hispanic country might not enjoy a Brazilian drink, but it stood out even before the whole church bell incident.
