John Hinckley attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan because of his obsession with Jodie Foster, an obsession centering around the film "Taxi Driver," which he saw over a dozen times. He identified strongly with the main character of the film, Travis Bickle.
Travis Bickle was modelled on Arthur Bremer, who shot presidential-hopeful Governor George Wallace, permanently paralyzing him.
I just find it creepy how one nihilistic fame-seeking assassin could inspire another without either being aware of it. So is that art imitating life or life imitating art?
