Just a few things that I noticed the second view through that could help burgeoning fic authors:

-The tattoos on John's forearms are both complete designs, not half and half as I first assumed. Firestorm717 found the symbol here, which is the Red King, a derivation of the alchemists' symbol for fire.
Some screencaps from the film of it are available
here.
(again, link thanks to firestorm717)

-The amulet symbol Father Hennesy wore is the Triquetra, a symbol of the holy trinity (among other things).

-The writing around John's door is in English, though I didn't catch the words. Anyone want to fill me in?

-According to the gravestone, Chas was born in 1985, which would make him 19 or 20 at the time of the film.

-According to much dialogue in the film, Constantine was at Ravenscar 20 years ago. He committed suicide at 15. So, if you assume that the suicide attempt was at the end or near the end of his institutionalization, that would make him 35. And if you're really keeping score, that makes John's suicide in 1985 - the same year Chas was born. Now there's a whole world of significance you could give to that in fic. This was also the year John started smoking.

ETA: -John appears to have a vertical scar on his stomach (when Lucifer rips open his shirt). My first thought was it must have been the result of revival efforts after the suicide attempt, but you wouldn't attempt major abdominal surgery in the back of an ambulance. Any ideas what the scar could be from?

ETA: -If anyone cares, it was 5:25AM when John slashed his wrists. Just thought I'd put that in since I bothered to read the watch.

I'm sure I'll find more stuff later, especially since I'm planning on getting the novelization. I was the only one who stayed in the theater all the way through the credits - granted, it's a Wednesday night and there were only ten people there to begin with. Can I just say, Shia makes a beautiful angel. Damn. It's canon wing!fic! Imagine that!

Funny how different Chas is in the books. He's still John's driver, but in a much more egalitarian sense, he wants nothing to do with magic, he's a martial arts master with bad home life, and both he and John are in their mid-40s for most of Hellblazer, early 50s now. Just thought you would find that amusing.

I'm all in favor of the John Constantine obsession (Chuck can verify my own addiction), but seriously, you have _got_ to read the comics now.

Yeah, I suspected as much. Guess I'll have to see it a third time. *g*

And the scar--I had assumed that was a Keanu scar, but I suppose not? Guess I'll have to get better-versed on Keanu's anatomy. Oh, the torture.

I've read some and Chuck is bringing me some more crack - hm - comics. What was that deleted comment about?

The discussion board on constatine_slash informs me that it is a Keanu scar - something about a motorcycle and a mountain.

Misread something and said something stupid. Then realized I'd misread it, and felt stupid and deleted it.

No, actually, I told you my deepest darkest secret, which incidentally would have totally changed the course of your life, and then changed my mind.

Well, since the comment was emailed to me when you posted it, I read it then was going to comment back a dope slap for you and it was gone. Poof!

I know you love Hellblazer, but I actually prefer the backstory in the movie. Something about being a suicide just gets me.

Ah. Yeah, I figured it was something like that. It looked to me a little too authentic for the production values on this film. *g*

Yeah, because that really matches the angst of being too cocky and accidentally consigning a small child's soul to hell.

"You learn the basics, you have a horrifying experience in a graveyard, they give you a trenchcoat and steal your razor. It's like an assembly line, really." - Ambrose Bierce, Stanley and His Monster

I'm retrieving my Magic cards this weekend, but I'll try to stuff a few volumes of Ennis' run on Hellblazer in my bag as well.

Yes, but I actually read the NewCastle comic and was completely underwhelmed. It was run of the mill horror stuff. It may have worked better in future comics as the backdrop for Constantine, but the execution of the actual story was shit. Or maybe that's just me.

I like the suicide thing because it makes Constantine a contradiction. He knows but doesn't believe. He is immune to divine grace. I've been having a whole debate with veryschway over this - quoting Hannah Arendt and Dante. I love existential angst in characters.
