There's going to be a new Sherlock Holmes movie starring...wait for it...Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and (drumroll please) Jude Law as Watson. They're trying to bring Holmes back to the books, which they interpret as him being the James Bond of 1891. While I agree that the most popular portrayal of Holmes (Basil Rathbone's) was too detached, too much of an asthete, and that the Holmes of the stories is a sensualist, a drug addict, a brawler, I'm still not seeing the James Bond thing.

I can't decide if this will be amazingly awesome or will suck really hard.

In either case, this has sent me back to my Jeremy Brett DVDs. Oh, "The Empty House." I will never tire of watching you.

I'd be curious to see Hugh Laurie as Holmes, since House is supposed to be essentially the same character in doctor form. But Robert Downey Jr. should be quite suited to playing a brilliant drug addict.

Dude, where have you been? There have been pics up all over of Downey Jr. shirtless and muscular as Holmes (some sort of bare knuckled boxing ocurrance in the film apparently), and a moustached Jude Law as Watson

I doubt very sincerely that anyone will ever be a better Holmes than Jeremy Brett. The first time I saw one of those episodes, I had a flash of recognition--this was the Sherlock Holmes I'd read and adored.

But I wish RDJr. all the luck in the world. I hope he nails it, but I'm not betting on it.

I'm morre worried about Jude Law as Watson, honestly. I just don't get that at all.

Chuckro mentioned that as well. Of course, my first reaction was god no! But then, Hugh Laurie will always be Bertie Wooster to me.

House and Holmes are both misanthropes, by House is far more callous and cruel than Holmes ever was (except purely unintentionally). The parallel is not exact. The closest thing to Holmes on TV right now, I think, is (very deliberately I'm sure), Goren on Law and Order Criminal Intent

I'd heard about this a while ago but I am intrigued to see how it goes.
