Well, here you are applying logic where there is no logic whatsoever to be found. Clearly the writers found themselves desperate for material and acted irrationally out of some misguided sense of that desperation. But that they have always shown disdain for the characters (since Season Two, I think), speaks to a deeper level of disdain for the audience.
As for investing in Season 4. Well. There are a few decent storylines going on. But they deal VERY BADLY with a particular bisexual/lesbian storyline and for that I want to kill them. Also there is a very clear message of WOMEN WANT CHILDREN AND MUST HAVE THEM STAT. Which makes me cringe in my soul of souls. The pursuit of Brendan/Booth goes on and on and ... uh, yeah.
Sweets is awesome, but Hodgins gets short shrift, which is sad.
The last two eps of this season have left me quite cold, but I may continue to watch, I don't know. *sigh*
