One brief thought on Doctor Who this season. What is up with the baby obsession this season? So far we've only had one episode ("Planet of the Ood") that has not been about aliens trying to use Earth as a hatchery. While I appreciate the "theme," it's gotten rather predictable. "We don't know what the gas is for!" It's to make more Santorans. "It's clone gas! They're making more Santorans!" *smack*

As for next week, hello Mary Sue *hem* Doctor's daughter. We get it. This season is about fertility.

But seriously, what is this, Children of Men? Is there an intergalactic sperm iradiation going on that's making it really hard for everyone to reproduce? And why is Earth the alien equivalent of Viagra?

Actually, it's a classic SF trope that humanity only has two things going for it: an instinctive proficiency in violence and an ability to breed like rabbits on Ecstasy. It's also an old chestnut that we are horribly inefficient, particularly in our own bodies and minds, and have so much raw material and potential we never even touch.

Also, Fires of Pompeii was out of necessity rather than deliberate targeting.

I'm intrigued by next week. We've known since the original episode that he had a daughter, and it's been a major topic of speculation. So I'm curious to see what they do with her. I am concerned, however, that the writer, Stephen Greenhorn, has only done one other Dr. Who episode--The Lazarus Experiment, one of the weakest of last season. That does not bode well.

I was thinking of it less in terms of "why do they come to Earth" and more in terms of "why do all these races suddenly need to breed"? In which case it completely fits. Since that's in the past, it also implies that it's some giant time-space thing, sort of like the Rift from the Time War was a major theme in season one.

We have? Why is it that I remember Captain Jack's one comment about being pregnant and not that?

Sorry, I meant "original episode" as in the first-ever episode of Doctor Who, back in 1963. The Doctor was traveling with his granddaughter, Susan, at the time--I'd have to check with Alan but I'm pretty sure at some point somewhere he mentioned a daughter rather than a son in terms of Susan's connection to him.
