Jane Austen
Jan. 10th, 2008 11:42 amOn Tuesday, I went with
mithras03 to see the new Masterpiece Theater version of Persuasion. Mithras had already seen this and thought it sucked (which it kinda did), and we whispered to each other for most of it, causing the biddies sitting in front of us to move. I really don't feel bad about that, though, since a) it was free and b) it's being broadcast on tv in the very near future.
It was being shown in the Great Hall at Cooper Union. Apparently this is a historically important hall--the speaker at the beginning went on and on about the people who'd spoken there (Abraham Lincoln, Norman Mailer...). However, it is the worst laid out auditorium I've ever been in. Why? There are pillars everywhere. (Second image down.) Most seats in the hall can't see the center of the stage and no seats can see all of the stage. They were showing the film on three adjacent screens out of necessity. I could only see the middle one. My friend sitting to my right could only see the screen on the left since a pillar obstructed the middle screen for her. I have to say, it's a great place to avoid assassination attempts, though, since there are no sight lines. Seriously. Who designed this?
I also learned that the new announcer for Masterpiece Theater is...Gillian Anderson. I cannot get over how freaky this. The whole intro I was going but...but...it's Scully! With long hair! Talking about true love! Gah!
